Periodontics or Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that studies diseases, and conditions that affect the periodontium, the supporting structures of teeth (gingiva and alveolar bone). In addition to restoring teeth, dentists are concerned with managing periodontal diseases such as gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (inflammation and or destruction of the bone surrounding the tooth). This is accomplished through prescribing one or more of the following:

• Prophylactic treatment (dental cleaning)

• Periodontal scaling and root planning (deep cleaning to the periodontal pockets and smoothing the root surfaces)

• Gingivectomy ( trimming the diseased portion of the gum)

• Periodontal surgery ( removing the diseased portion of the bone surrounding the tooth as well as trimming the diseased portion of the gum)
